Quebec Alcohol Abuse. Print E-mail
Alcohol abuse is not a reality that one should ignore or try to deny. Alcoholism can be a grave reason which can take one away from his nearest and dearest ones. But nevertheless, the legal blood alcohol level to drop to 0.05 is a measure that is facing very strong opposition in Quebec. Drivers with blood-alcohol level higher than 0.05 will now have their license suspended for 24 hours. Even though the aim of such lowering of limit is simple and only has to do with saving more lives and even reduce alcohol consumption in a roundabout way, this idea is not meeting support from a large number of people. It is being seen as a dogmatic mode of trying to set things right, where adults are not given their freedom to enjoy themselves moderately.
One way to curb alcohol problems with or without the law is to let one's family to help when such addiction has been recognized. Treatment once coupled with family collaboration speeds up and is done more effortlessly than when it is just a private solo affair. There are ways by which one can help a family member suffering from possible alcohol addiction:

1. Facing the truth without going into denial or trying to cover up even when there is blatant proof of alcohol abuse.

2. Talking, heart to heart with the individual concerned, with sincere attempts to help. Showing support in a strong, unyielding way.

3. Helping to decide on the type of treatment and being ready to continue with mental support throughout the entire process.

4. Being prepared for a relapse which happens almost every time once treatment gets over. The trick is to stick to the rules and measures to avoid any future addiction.

The measures apart, one needs to be continually counseled and be forced to maintain a strict regime to help come out of an addiction which can have extremely fatal consequences. Alcohol addiction not only harms the addicted individual but also affects family members. That aside, it inflicts deep physical damages which can even prove to be life-taking. The mental trauma associated with such cases of alcoholism needs to take care of as well, otherwise which can leave irreparable scars. For those who are close to being addicted, can take precautionary measures now, cut down on alcohol consumption and drink moderately, stay within limits and enjoy and live life, the way everyone should. After all, prevention is always better than cure.
